Jesus is not a Religion

“These people honor me with their lip, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.” Mark 7:6

Hey guys,

I want to discuss something that I believe is important for people to know: that Jesus is not a religion. What I mean by this is that religion is based on man-made rules and to be a follower of Jesus all we have to do is believe in Him, love, and want to have a relationship with Him. Religion often scares people because it makes us feel like no matter what we do we aren’t good enough. It makes us follow a bunch of man-made rules in order to work our way to Heaven. And this is NOT how we get to Heaven. Churches that cooperate with these rules really frustrate me because they are giving people the wrong idea about Jesus. We ultimately cannot work our way to Heaven and God doesn’t want us to. The whole premise of Jesus dying on the cross was to save us of our sins. He did this because He knew that we would sin and make mistakes. He knew that there would be no possible way for us to work our way to Heaven. That is why in the Bible it says we are saved by grace through faith.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8

Religion also makes people judgmental because religion is based on if we are doing the right thing or the wrong thing. I have found that the most judgmental people are the religious ones. This is sad because they often turn a lot of people away from God. God is love and as Christians we need to be loving and quick to forgive, just like our Heavenly Father. Jesus is the example of how we should live, but it’s not a set of rules we need to follow. People may get confused when they find that in Christianity there are 10 commandments we have to obey. But truthfully these are things we should do anyway. I have found that with being a child of God my whole outlook on life is different from others, even the religious people. Jesus fills us with His love and peace and it makes me want to live a more wholesome life. I strive to do good and help others because that naturally brings me happiness.

Life is so full of rules anyway that it’s a comfort to know that with God I don’t have to be perfect to be accepted in His eyes. I have come to discover in my walk with Jesus that being a child of God is so freeing. When I talk to Him there aren’t any sorts of rituals I have to follow. I can talk to Him whenever wherever. I talk to Him more closely than I talk to my best friend. He knows everything about me and still loves me unconditionally! That word is often hard to comprehend in this world when there are so many conditions behind things. With Jesus though, I never have to be afraid that He will leave me or disown me. He loves me more than I could ever imagine and only wants the best for me and for all of us.

So, all in all, please don’t let the rules of religion scare you away from Jesus. He is the farthest thing from rules and just wants to have a deep relationship with us and help us to live happy, fulfilling lives. This is a very deep subject and I hope I covered enough bases without overwhelming ya’ll. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to comment or to email me.

Have a blessed day!

P.S. The Shack is honestly the perfect novel to explain this premise. It portrays the relationship between man and God. I highly recommend reading it. I can read that book over and over and still enjoy it and get something out of it.
